If you work a desk job, chances are you’ve spent countless hours staring blankly at your screen, wondering why you’re required to be there when all your work is done. Watching the clock creep through the hours is an agonizing way to spend your day, and nobody deserves that fate.
If you can’t take the boredom anymore, consider some of these ways to spice up your workstation.
1. Plan Your Next Vacation

There are many ways to legally gamble online now, and it’s becoming more and more popular all over the world. Whether you prefer fantasy sports or Texas Hold ‘Em, you can easily find a website to satisfy your craving for taking risks.
5. Become a Day Trader
This isn’t that much different than gambling, but it is, for some reason, a little more socially acceptable. If you have a decent understanding of the stock market, you can open up an E-Trade or Robinhood account and experience all the dizzying highs and horrifying lows of day trading – all while pretending to do your actual job.
6. Watch a Movie
With streaming services like YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu, there are hundreds of thousands of movies and TV shows that you can choose from. Needless to say, this is more easily done when you are working from home, but if you have a decent angle at your office, you can always exit out of the screen if you see someone moving in your direction.
7. Write a Story
So, you’ve always wanted to write a novel, but could never find the motivation to get started? Why wait any longer when you have 6 hours of idle time in any given day? Open up a Word document and get writing – people might actually think you’re doing your job!
8. Crossword Puzzles
You can get cheap books of crossword puzzles at any newsstand, and sometimes it’s nice to look away from your screen for a bit. Hide them in your “day planner” and your boss will be none the wiser!
9. Go Shopping
As long as you’re getting paid, you might as well find a good way to spend that money, right? Hop onto Amazon or any other online retailer and buy some of those items on your wish list without ever having to step into a store.
10. Plan Your Dinner
You can search pretty much any dish in existence and find a recipe for it, so figure out what you want for dinner and start your planning way ahead of time.
11. Read a Book
E-books are readily available all over the internet and can be opened right in your browser. If you have a big enough wall of text on your screen, people might think you’re knee-deep in some technical jargon.
12. Listen to Music
You can do this in the background of pretty much any other activities. Just get some good headphones so you don’t annoy your coworkers with your bad taste.
